This document provides instructions on how to perform a full installation of HMC V3 R3.x by using the HMC V3 R3.x Recovery CDs.
Installing a clean version of HMC 3.3.x via HMC Recovery CDs
Before proceeding, verify that there is a current Backup Critical Console Data. This backup might be needed for disaster recovery if an unexpected error should occur in the installation process. For further information on Backup Critical Console Data, refer to Chapter 19 of the following publication:
Hardware Management Console for pSeries Installation and Operations Guide
Install the Recovery CDs
At the HMC interface, follow these steps to perform a clean install of your HMC from the Recovery CDs.
- Reboot your HMC with the first CD inserted in the DVD-RAM drive.
- When asked to perform an Install/Recovery or Upgrade, select Install/Recovery F8.
- Select F1 on the next screen to confirm. The HMC processes the first CD, reboots the HMC from the hard drive, and then prompts you to enter the second CD.
- When prompted, remove the first CD, put the second CD in the DVD-RAM drive, and then press Enter. The system will process the second CD, and then reboots the HMC again.
After this reboot, the HMC displays a graphical login prompt. - Next you will need to set up and configure your HMC. Follow the instructions in your operations guide. You may also find the instructions in this Redbook helpful: Effective System Management Using the IBM Hardware Management Console for pSeries. See Chapters 1-4.
- If you need the Information Center manuals in a language other than English (en_US), use the Install Corrective Service task to install the translated Information Center manuals. There is no need to reboot the HMC until you have installed all the disks you need.
Verify a successful install
After the HMC is rebooted, follow these steps to verify that the HMC upgrade and corrective service update were successful:
- Select Help in the top menu bar.
- Select About the Hardware Management Console.
- On the "About" splash panel, check for the following information:
The Version is 3
The Release is 3.x
Note: x is the release level of the HMC version you are installing, for example 3.5.
