Before upgrading your machine to HMC 3.3.x, please read the Upgrade prerequisites for special instructions for certain types of upgrades.
Upgrading an HMC 3.3.x via the Recovery CDs
Partition and profile information is stored in the Managed System. We suggest that the upgrade to HMC V3 R3.x and updates to the managed system's firmware should not occur simultaneously, to minimize the chance of losing partition data.
Run the "Backup Critical Console Data Task" before upgrading. Save the data to the DVD. This operation allows you to restore your HMC to the state that is was before the update occurred. You can then recover the HMC to the last known state, if the update encounters a problem.
If you have to recover, reinstall the HMC with the HMC recovery CD that you last used to install the HMC. When used in conjunction with the backup that you saved to the DVD, the HMC will be restored to its last known state. Use the instructions found in the HMC Setup and Operations guide.
If you are running the Backup Critical Console Data Task on a Release 3 level of HMC that is less than R3 V2.5 you should first apply the following fix. APAR IY50217 PTF U496327.
The HMC Recovery CD V3 R3.x package is a set of 2 CDs. Follow these steps to upgrade:
- Run the "Save Upgrade Data task" to save the HMC's current configuration files. Select the option to save to disk.
Note:
The save upgrade data task should be run immediately before reboot of the HMC with the recovery CD. If the HMC reboots and does not go to the install menu of the recovery CD, you should rerun the save upgrade task.
- Insert the Volume 1 of 2 Recovery CD into the CD drive, and then reboot the HMC.
- Use install options F1, and then F1 to do upgrade install.
After CD 1 installs you will be prompted to install CD #2. - Insert the Volume 2 of 2 CD into the CD drive and press enter.
The HMC will reboot, and then install volume 2. - When volume 2 ejects, select option 2, and then press enter to reboot the HMC.
- After you determine the upgrade was successful, you should run the Backup Critical Console Data task, to protect the customized data of the current V3 R3.x HMC image from a possible disk failure. After the Backup Critical Console Data task is completed on this new HMC version, use the HMC V3 R3.x Recovery CD's to recover your HMC.
