Installing a specific fix
The HMC is a closed system. All tasks are accomplished using the graphical user interface known as the HMC interface.
Corrective service can be ordered on a CD-ROM or downloaded from this site as one or more ZIP files or ISO images. You can use downloaded ISO images to burn your own CD-ROMs.
The ZIP file is available through anonymous FTP download. If the HMC has direct FTP access to the Internet, skip Steps 1 & 2.
Step 1. Decide where to store the corrective service image
The HMC interface is designed to install corrective service from a CD or from a remote server via FTP.
The ZIP or ISO image must be stored on a system that accepts FTP requests.
Step 2. Download ZIP or ISO image from the Internet
If you have not already downloaded the fix package you need, download either the ZIP or ISO image from the Downloads page for HMC 3.3 fixes.
Notes
If you wish to create an update CD for use with the Install Corrective Service option, you cannot use the ZIP file to create the CD. Instead you need to download the ISO image for the fix package, and then follow the instructions at this location: Burning CDs from ISO images on Linux.
If the system you are using to download a corrective service image cannot accept FTP requests from the HMC, you will need to move the file to a system that accepts FTP requests.
Step 3. Install Update
Caution:
As a safety precaution, IBM recommends that you back up critical
console data. See your operations guide for more information on
backing up the HMC.
Use one of the following procedures to install the update:
Install the update from a ZIP file
At the HMC interface, follow these steps to install the update from the ZIP file image:
- Select Software Maintenance
- Select HMC
- Select Install Corrective Service
- Select Download corrective service from remote system
- Enter the specified information in the following fields:
- Remote Site
- Enter the fully qualified name of the host where the ZIP file is stored.
Note: If you are downloading the corrective service file directly from the Internet, enter
ftp.software.ibm.com
- Patch File
- Enter the FTP directory and ZIP file name (that is, the
absolute pathname to the ZIP file).
Note: If you are downloading the corrective service file directly from the Internet, enter
/software/server/hmc/fixes/<filename>.zip
- User ID
- Enter the FTP userid. (For direct internet download, use "anonymous".)
- Password
- Enter the FTP password for the userid. (For direct internet download, use your email address.)
The HMC interface retrieves the update package from the remote FTP server and begins the installation process.
Install the update from a CD
Put the CD you created from the ISO image in the CD drive, and then follow these steps on the HMC interface to install the update from the CD:
- Select Software Maintenance
- Select HMC
- Select Install Corrective Service
- Select Apply corrective service from removable media
- Select OK
The HMC interface retrieves the update package from the remote CD and begins the installation process.
Step 4. Reboot
Reboot the HMC after the installation of the update has completed. Rebooting ensures that all changes are available immediately.
Step 5. Verify a successful update
After the HMC is rebooted, follow these steps to verify that the corrective service update was successful:
- Select Help in the top menu bar.
- Select About the Hardware Management Console.
- On the "About" splash panel, check for the following information "Verification information" listed for specific fix in the HMC V3.3 Cumulative Fix History and Readme.
