Special upgrade instructions for HMC Version 5

Special instructions

For these HMC machine types:

  • 7310-CR2
  • 7310-CR3
  • 7315-CR2
  • 7315-CR3

Follow the instructions below to perform an HMC upgrade:

  • from HMC Version 4.x to HMC Version 5.x
  • from HMC Version 5.1 to HMC Version 5.2.1

You can also use these special instructions to perform an upgrade on other HMC machine types.

Preparing the Upgrade

You must first save the upgrade data onto DVD-RAM media. Note that you can use the same DVD-RAM that was used for backing up critical console data.

  1. Select Licensed Internal Code Maintenance.
  2. Select HMC Code Update.
  3. Select Save Upgrade Data, and then insert a formatted DVD-RAM media into the DVD drive.
  4. Select DVD drive, and then click Continue.
    (In some HMC versions, you must log in to the HMC as a user with the hmcpe role, otherwise the DVD option is not selectable.)
  5. Wait for the Save Upgrade Data task to complete. If the task fails, contact your next level of support before proceeding.
  6. If the Save Upgrade Data task is successful, remove the DVD-RAM.

Start the Upgrade

  1. Insert into the DVD-RAM drive the first recovery media for the HMC Version you are upgrading to, select the Console menu item, and then select Exit.
  2. Click Exit to display the Exit Hardware Management Console window.
  3. Click Reboot Console.The HMC reads the media in the DVD-RAM drive and displays the Install/Backup/Restore wizard window.
  4. Select Install (NOT Upgrade), and then click Next.
  5. Select Install from media, and then click Next.
  6. When the first media is complete, the following options are displayed
    1. Install additional software from media
    2. Finish the installation
  7. Select Option 1, Install additional software from media, and then press Enter to continue the installation. When the second media is complete, the following options are displayed:
    1. Restore from Critical Console Data Backup
    2. Finish the installation.
  8. Select Option 2, Finish the installation.
  9. The HMC then completes the boot process, during which you are prompted to select language and keyboard mapping.
  10. At the Hardware Management Console login prompt, log in using the hscroot user id and the default password abc123.
  11. Accept the License Agreement panels.
  12. When promoted to run the setup wisard, select Cancel.
  13. Immediately install the MH00822 specific fix package.

Install PTF MH00822

  1. Use the Install Corrective Service task to install PTF MH00822. A reboot is not necessary.
  2. Open a restricted shell terminal as follows:
    1. Right-click on the desktop area.
    2. Select terminals.
    3. Select rshterm.
  3. Insert into the DVD-RAM drive the DVD-RAM media containing the Upgrade Data you saved, and then, issue the mount /media/cdrom command.
  4. Run the rstupgdata -r dvd command.
  5. Run the hmcshutdown -r -t now command to reboot the HMC and start the restore of upgrade data automatically on the next boot.
