Upgrade notes and special upgrade procedure

Upgrade notes

  1. Upgrading from HMC V4.x to HMC V6.1.2 requires the special upgrade procedure outlined below.
  2. IBM recommends that you upgrade your HMC from HMC V4.x directly to HMC V6.1.2 via the Recovery media and this procedure. (That is, it is not necessary to upgrade to HMC 6.1.0 before upgrading to HMC 6.1.2.)
  3. Next, it is recommended that you update from HMC 6.1.2 to HMC V6.1.3 via the V6.1.3 Update package.
  4. Finally, you should then apply all recommended fixes to your HMC 6.1.3 installation, not only to have the latest HMC 6.1.3 fixes and enhancements, but also to prepare your HMC for an Upgrade to HMC Version 7.

Special V4 to V6 Upgrade procedure

Complete the steps in the following procedure to upgrade an HMC at V4.x to HMC 6.1.2.

  1. Select Licensed Internal Code Maintenance.
  2. Select HMC Code Update.
  3. Select Save Upgrade Data, and then insert a formatted DVD-RAM media into the DVD drive.
  4. Select DVD drive, and then click Continue.
(In some HMC versions, you must log in to the HMC as a user with the hmcpe role, otherwise the DVD option is not selectable.)
  5. Wait for the Save Upgrade Data task to complete. If the task fails, contact your next level of support before proceeding.
  6. If the Save Upgrade Data task is successful, remove the DVD-RAM, insert the first V6.x recovery media into the DVD-RAM drive, select the Console menu option, and then select Exit.
  7. Click Exit to display the Exit Hardware Management Console window.
  8. Click Reboot Console.

The HMC reads the media in the DVD-RAM drive and displays the Install/Backup/Restore wizard window.
  9. Select Install (NOT Upgrade), and then click Next.
  10. Select Install from media, and then click Next.
  11. When prompted to insert the next media, remove the first media, then insert the second media into the DVD-RAM drive.
  12. Select option 1, and then press Enter to continue the installation. When the second media is complete, the following options are displayed:
    1. Install additional software from media
    2. Finish the installation.
  13. Select Option 2, Finish the installation.
  14. The HMC then completes the boot process, during which you are prompted to select language and keyboard mapping.
  15. At the Hardware Management Console login prompt, log in using the hscroot user id and the default password.
  16. Accept the License Agreement panels, and then open a restricted shell terminal.
  17. Insert into the DVD-RAM drive the DVD-RAM media containing the Upgrade Data you saved while the HMC was at Version 4. Then, issue the mount /media/cdrom command.
  18. Run the rstupgdata -r dvd command.
  19. Run the hmcshutdown -r -t now command to reboot the HMC and start the restore of upgrade data automatically on the next boot.

Verifying a successful update

After the HMC is rebooted, follow these steps to verify that the HMC upgrade was successful

  1. Select Help in the top menu bar.
  2. Select About the Hardware Management Console.
