Updating the HMC via Update DVDs

The Install Corrective Service task and the HMC Update package are used to update the HMC. In addition, a required maintenance package may need to be installed. Check the Readme to see if a required maintenance package or fix has been released for the HMC Update release.

You can download ISO images for Update and required maintenance packages from Fix Central, and then burn your own DVDs or CDs from the ISO images as follows:

Follow these steps to install the update and maintenance packages:

Step 1. Install the update

The HMC V7 Update corrective service may consist of more than one DVD. All DVDs must be installed.

At the HMC interface, follow this procedure for each DVD in the Update package:

  1. Select HMC Code Update.
  2. Select Install Corrective Service.
  3. Select Apply Corrective Service from removable media.
  4. Insert the first update DVD into the DVD drive of the HMC.
  5. Press OK to start the update.
  6. When the first DVD completes, the HMC displays a completion message and a checkbox to Install the next corrective service when you select OK.
  7. Remove the first DVD, click the Install the next corrective service when you select OK checkbox, and then click OK. The HMC returns to the Install Corrective Service screen.
  8. Insert the next DVD, select the Apply Corrective Service from removable media radio button, and then click OK to continue the update.
  9. Repeat steps 1 through 8 for each DVD in the Update package.
  10. After the last DVD completes, the HMC displays the following message:

The corrective service file was successfully applied. Wait until all tasks complete and Manually reboot the HMC for the changes to take effect, or select the checkbox below.
  11. Remove the last DVD, click the Automatically reboot the HMC when you select OK checkbox, and then select OK.

If the HMC Update has a required maintenance package or mandatory fix, go to Step 2, otherwise, proceed to Step 4 to verify a successful update.

Put the CD for the maintenance level fix in the CD drive, and then follow these steps the HMC interface to install the update from the CD:

  1. Select HMC Code Update.
  2. Select Install Corrective Service.
  3. Select Apply corrective service from removable media.
  4. Select OK.

The HMC interface retrieves the update package from the remote CD and begins the installation process.

Step 3. Reboot

Reboot the HMC after the installation of the maintenance fix has completed. Rebooting ensures that all changes are available immediately.

  2. Select About the Hardware Management Console.
  3. On the "About" splash panel, look for updated information about the update and fix you installed, and then compare it to the "Splash panel information" section in the Readme file for the Update.
