Install an HMC V7 update directly from the Internet
Use the Install Corrective Service task to update the HMC directly from the Internet. You may also need to install a required maintenance package. The HMC Version 7 Cumulative PTF History and Readme lists information you need for verifying the successful download and installation of the Update corrective service package (PTF). The Readme also lists any required maintenance or fix packages for an Update.
Step 1. Install the Update package
An HMC V7 Update corrective service package can consist of two or more ZIP files. Each file must be installed. That is, you must perform the following procedure once for each ZIP file. Please read and follow these installation instructions carefully.
Caution:
As a safety precaution, IBM recommends that you back up critical console data. See your operations guide for more information on backing up the HMC.
- Select HMC Code Update
- Select Install Corrective Service
- Select Download corrective service from remote system
- Enter the specified information in the following fields:
- Remote Site
- Enter the following name of the Internet host where the ZIP files are stored.
ftp.software.ibm.com
- Patch File
- Enter the following FTP directory and ZIP file name for the first ZIP file
/software/server/hmc/updates/HMC_Update_V7Rxxx_1.zip
where xxx is the Release number for the V7 update, such as, 310, 320 or 330.
- User ID
- Enter anonymous
- Password
- Enter your e-mail address as the password.
- Repeat steps 1 through 4 above for each successive ZIP file in the package. The last number in the file name, before the "zip" extension denotes the volume number of the package.
- Reboot the HMC after the installation completes.
If the V7 Readme lists a required maintenance package or mandatory fix for this Update, go to Step 2. Install the required maintenance package otherwise, proceed to Step 4. Verify a successful update.
Notes
- The combined size of Update ZIP files can be greater than 2 Gigabytes. If you are downloading these files to a server, please make sure that the operating system can handle files of this size. For UNIX systems, use the ulimit to check, and then change the file size limit, if necessary.
- Do not use the browser on the HMC to download the file onto the HMC. The download and save functions on the HMC's browser are disabled. Use the Install Corrective Service task on the HMC interface. Using the Install Corrective Service task ensures that all fixes and enhancements in this corrective service update are installed.
Step 2. Install the required maintenance package
- Select HMC Code Update
- Select Install Corrective Service
- Select Download corrective service from remote system
- Enter the specified information in the following fields:
- Remote Site
- Enter the following name of the Internet host where the ZIP files are stored.
ftp.software.ibm.com
- Patch File
- Enter the following FTP directory and ZIP file name for ZIP file
/software/server/hmc/fixes/<MHnnnnn>.zip
where <MHnnnnn>.zip is the name of the required maintenance file.
- User ID
- Enter anonymous
- Password
- Enter your e-mail address as the password.
The HMC interface retrieves the update package from the remote FTP server and begins the install process.
Step 3. Reboot
Reboot the HMC after the installation of the update has completed. Rebooting ensures that all changes are available immediately.
Step 4. Verify a successful update
After the HMC is rebooted, follow these steps to verify that the corrective service update was successful:
- Select Help in the top menu bar.
- Select About the Hardware Management Console.
- On the "About" splash panel, look for updated information about the update and fix you installed, and then compare it to the "Splash panel information" section in the Readme file for the Update.
