Installing specific fixes from a ZIP file
Use the Install Corrective Service task to apply individual corrective service (specific fixes) to the HMC from a remote system. This task uses the ZIP file for a specific fix that you download from this site to your remote system.
The HMC Version 7 Cumulative PTF History and Readme lists information you need for verifying the successful download and installation of a corrective service package (PTF). There is a section for each PTF at the beginning of the Readme, with the latest package listed first.
In addition, the "View" link for a PTF, on the Corrective service/Downloads page, provides a quick link to PTF-specific information in the Readme.
Step 1. Decide where to store the ZIP files
Since the HMC is a closed system, you cannot download the ZIP files and save them onto the HMC. The HMC and the interface does not support this function. The interface is designed to install corrective service from CDs or from a remote server via FTP.
The ZIP files must be stored on a system that accepts FTP requests.
Step 2. Download ZIP files from the Internet
If you have not already downloaded the ZIP file(s) for the desired corrective service package, follow these steps:
Step 3. Install corrective service
Caution:
As a safety precaution, IBM recommends that you back up critical console data. See your operations guide for more information on backing up the HMC.
Follow these steps to install a specific corrective service package from the remote system where you stored the ZIP file for the package.
- In the Navigation pane, select Updates
- In the Work pane, click the Update HMC button.
- Select Download corrective service from remote system
- Enter the specified information in the following fields:
- Remote Site
- Enter the fully qualified name of the host where the ZIP file is stored.
- Patch File
- Enter the FTP directory and ZIP file name for the ZIP file (that is, the absolute pathname to the ZIP file).
- User ID
- Enter the FTP userid.
- Password
- Enter the FTP password for the userid.
The HMC interface retrieves the corrective service package from the remote FTP server and begins the installation process.
Step 4. Reboot
Reboot the HMC after the installation of the corrective service package has completed. Rebooting ensures that all changes are available immediately.
Always follow any additional instructions pertaining to each corrective service you install, as additional steps may be required. See the Readme information for the specific corrective service to find any additional steps.
Step 5. Verify a successful update
After the HMC is rebooted, follow these steps to verify that the corrective service update was successful:
- Select Help in the top menu bar.
- Select About the Hardware Management Console.
- On the "About" splash panel, look for updated information about the update and fix you installed. Open the HMC Version 7 Readme and compare the "Splash panel" information for the update and fix PTFs to your HMC.
